Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, CBM&S recognizes the enduring impact of The New York Community Trust and the philanthropic partnerships that helped New Yorkers recover, rebuild, and move forward.
In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, The Trust joined with the United Way of New York City to establish the September 11th Fund. Created on the afternoon of September 11, the Fund was designed to address both the immediate and long-term needs of victims, families, and affected communities.
Over its lifespan, the September 11th Fund awarded approximately $528 million through hundreds of grants. Its work extended far beyond immediate financial assistance, supporting mental health services, employment assistance, health care, small businesses, nonprofits, and other resources for New Yorkers affected by the attacks.
A Legacy That Continues
The response to September 11 demonstrated what can happen when philanthropy, nonprofits, community leaders, and institutions work together during an unprecedented crisis. The Fund supported mental health and trauma-related services, including crisis counseling and initiatives designed to strengthen the network of professionals serving affected New Yorkers.
Twenty-five years later, that work remains an important example of philanthropy creating not only immediate relief, but lasting community infrastructure.
Celebrating Long Island Philanthropy at Greentree
That spirit of collaboration continues today.
On September 8, The Trust hosted a donor appreciation event at The Greentree Foundation, welcoming nearly 70 guests for an evening focused on Long Island philanthropy. The gathering celebrated The Trust’s donor community, its relationship with Greentree, and the important role philanthropy can play in connecting resources with meaningful needs across Long Island.
The evening was also a reminder that lasting community impact is built through relationships. By bringing donors, organizations, and community partners together, The Trust continues the collaborative approach that has defined much of its work throughout the region.
